Associate Director, DevOps

Amyris has developed an industry-leading platform for designing and building synthetic organisms. Our technology is being used today to make clean beauty products, bio-based renewable chemicals, and even vaccine ingredients. The DevOps team at Amyris supports a suite of custom applications that make this cutting-edge science possible as well as off the shelf platforms to help support our consumer and eCommerce pipelines. The Associate Director of DevOps will lead our DevOps team at Amyris to make software engineering across the company easier, more secure, and more reliable.


  • Lead and manage a team of 5-10 DevOps Engineers with a range of experience and expertise, from experienced SREs to Platform Engineers to junior DevOps engineers, to support software development lifecycles for a team across the company.
  • Provide operational KPI metrics & reports to senior management, and quantify direct impacts of outages on the business.
  • Drive accountability for quality aspects in release, system performance, platform availability, operational efficiency, and risk management.
  • Assess and provide feedback on architectural designs for operational acceptance.
  • Lead SRE activities on the DevOps team, with production support, and quickly restore service during impacts.
  • Continue to maintain a strong security posture across all infrastructure systems.
  • Define and own the team’s OKRs, roadmap, and budgets. In addition, you should be able to champion and partner with our engineering leaders to set and maintain effective SLOs across the org.
  • Work closely with our product & engineering leadership to set standards around patterns, frameworks, technologies, and processes to promote a simple and consistent approach across multiple types of services. Create and chair committees or cross-department working groups to spread best-practices across the company.

Basic Qualificaitons:

  • B.S. plus 5+ years in infrastructure and/or application development; or equivalent experience with advanced degree(s).
  • 5+ years managing and working with a team of software or devops engineers.
  • 5+ years experience in Developing monitoring tools, ticket management systems, and CI/CD systems.
  • 2+ years of experience as a Site Reliability Engineer or Leading a Site Reliability Engineering team.
  • Must be flexible and adapt well to change.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expert-level knowledge of Cloud and hyperscaler technologies.
  • Advanced knowledge of infrastructure architecture, implementation and operations.
  • Advanced knowledge relational database technologies (Postgres, MS SQL, etc).
  • Advanced experience in containerization is required.
  • Advanced skill in Docker is preferred.
  • Deep understanding of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) philosophy, technologies, platforms and tools, SLA management, incident resolution, and automation.
  • Advanced experience with source control, deployment and continuous integration tools/environments including Git/Github, Jenkins, Linux package management (CI/CD).
  • TCP/IP and networking knowledge.
  • Experience working within an ITIL, Agile, lean or other operational and lifecycle framework environments.
  • Experience with strategic technology planning, and execution.
  • Experience in eCommerce and/or STEM industries is preferred.
  • Proven strategic and tactical thinker, able and comfortable translating business strategy into architectures / plans and equally comfortable rolling-up-your sleeves to problem solve with your team.
