Assistant Controller - Accounting Ops

In this role, you will manage an accounting and financial reporting operation in a deadline focused environment with ultimate responsibility for the quality of the work. Possesses the vision to set strategic direction for the team in response to emerging accounting issues and changes in the business environment. Uses superior communication skills to influence and collaborate with all levels of the organization, including making persuasive presentations to increasingly large audiences. Responsible for developing employees with the capabilities needed to meet the current and future objectives of the enterprise. Fosters an environment of continuous improvement, initiating and/or leading cross-functional projects to improve efficiency and effectiveness.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the accurate, timely completion of monthly, quarterly, and annual book close cycles for a complex accounting operation.
  • Responsible for the accurate production of all financial reports issued by a complex accounting operation, ensuring compliance with all accounting regulations.
  • Oversees the research of all relevant accounting policy issues and the development of corresponding new processes, ensuring issues are communicated appropriately to senior management.
  • Responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and continuous improvement of an internal control framework that ensures accurate, timely and compliant financial reporting.
  • Acts as a financial advisor to strategic business units or other departments, having the vision to make recommendations for accounting treatment that improves business outcomes.
  • Understands the interdependencies of financial systems, prioritizing and implementing enhancements and planning appropriately for changes.
  • Has the vision and insight to recognize emerging trends and organizational changes and can set strategic direction for the work unit.
  • Fosters an environment of continuous improvement, initiating and/or leading cross-functional projects to improve efficiency or effectiveness.
  • Oversee on-shore and off-shore teams responsible for the accounting of expenses, premium, commission, DAC, and new and emerging products as they are developed. Responsible for monthly deliverables such as allocations, accruals, journal entries, and account reconciliations as well as certain quarterly and year end footnotes and statutory accounting schedules.
  • Oversee general ledger production to include manual entries, ledger maintenance, interface processing and error clearing, and control checks to ensure the ledger is complete and accurate.
  • Partner with Corporate & business partners teams to ensure that accounting is reflective of evolving reporting needs and variances are investigated and explained appropriately.
  • Partner with teams across Corporate and business units on strategic initiatives and priorities to include design and testing of a new general ledger and ERP system, integrations and business process changes, and other initiatives as they occur.
  • Responsible for developing the team`s capabilities to meet both current and future needs of the accounting operation and the enterprise.
  • Attracts, engages, and advances the careers of people from all backgrounds and experiences.
  • Structures the organization to address changes in the business or improve customer service.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor`s degree (Accounting or Finance).
  • CPA or advanced degree in Accounting preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of accounting or finance experience.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to execute thoroughly in a fast-paced work environment, adapting quickly to changing conditions to achieve results.
  • Possesses superior communication skills to influence and collaborate with all levels of the organization to gain support for ideas and execute on projects that deliver value to customers.
  • Comfortable leading meetings, making strategic recommendations to senior management and giving presentations to increasingly large audiences.
