As an Assistant Editor at Outside Online, you’ll join a dynamic, fast paced editorial organization publishing provocative and informative storytelling aimed at inspiring readers to spend more time outside. Working closely with our editorial leadership and veteran writers, you’ll fact-check feature stories to ensure journalistic accuracy. You’ll also help develop story ideas; assign, edit, and write content; produce editorial newsletters; work on special projects and network editorial packages; and help shape our evolving strategy.
Within 1 month, you will:
- Attend biweekly Adventure/Culture and Travel section story meetings, bringing pitches and brainstorming ideas
- Assist with daily writing and production of What You Missed newsletter
- Fact-check for print and online
- Bring news stories to the daily meeting
Within 6 months, you will:
- Lead fact-check one feature per month
- Fact-check one to three quick-turnaround online stories every month
- Write quick-turnaround stories for the Adventure, Travel, and Culture sections as needed
- Write Exposure and/or Between The Lines sections in each print issue
Within 12 months, you will:
- Recruit new writers and develop pitches for Travel and Adventure
- Take over production of the What You Missed newsletter
- Write 2 news/news analysis stories per week
- Assist with content and story package initiatives for Outside Online and Outside magazine
What YOU bring to Outside: (Preferred Qualifications)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and a passion for research, reporting, and storytelling
- 2+ years of writing, editing, and/or fact-checking experience
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple projects with overlapping deadlines
- Strong organizational skills and a commitment to factual accuracy
- Passion for journalism and desire to get your foot in the door for a media career
- The ability to thrive in an atmosphere of change and innovation.

Entirely remote jobs that could be performed in Colorado: Employees can expect to be paid a non-exempt hourly rate of between $21.63 to $24.00. Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, Flexible Time Away, sick leave, and more. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant’s location, market data/ranges, an applicant’s skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
