About the Role
The Athletic is looking for an Audience Editor to join the newsroom Audience team and partner with the NFL and NBA verticals to reach new readers, while also further engaging current readers. Candidates don’t need to have direct experience covering these leagues day to day but must have an interest in the biggest storylines, questions and trends around them.
The audience editor will work with the verticals senior editors to inform coverage decisions, pitch timely and evergreen stories that compliment The Athletic’s regular coverage and engage reader interest. Working with the audience team, they will work to maximize the reach of the verticals coverage through search and social best practices and coordinating promotion with the programming and newsletter teams. The audience editor will track and analyze data for the verticals to provide recommendations to editors.
The role is remote and will report into the Newsroom Audience team.
This role requires working evening and weekend shifts. It also requires schedule shifts during major sporting events.
Responsibilities
- Identifying and pitching audience focused story ideas to vertical leaders on a daily, weekly and monthly basis that are aligned with The Athletic’s mission to provide the best in sports journalism.
- Drive communication between vertical editors and the audience team around tentpole events.
- Handle audience reporting for verticals on a weekly/monthly level delivering insights on potential opportunities for further growth.
- Work closely with search, programming and social teams during tentpole events to monitor performance and identify opportunities.
- Work with vertical leaders and outside teams (email, social, programming, search) in determining optimized publish times for the next day’s stories.
- Deliver daily reports to vertical leads that highlight trending stories, moments, and lines of coverage along with ideas of how to approach them in a way consistent with The Athletic’s journalism.
- Partner with newsroom content analytics team to provide deep and actionable analysis to verticals.
Requirements
- 2 years of experience working in newsrooms/digital journalism.
- Comfortable with data analysis and using data to inform decision making and ideation for stories.
- An understanding of the search and social media signals that indicate a story, moment or storyline is trending.
- A willingness to collaborate, and the ability to partner with colleagues across the newsroom, the strategy, product, data and marketing teams, and beyond.
- The role is remote and will report into the Newsroom Audience team.

The annual base salary range for this role is $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
