About the Role

Reporting to the Assistant Controller, our first dedicated Tax and Payroll hire will act as the go to person for all income and employment-related Tax and Payroll operations and be our primary liaison with external advisors. The role comes with a high level of autonomy to continue building out our Tax and Payroll processes and to provide strategic input on the Company’s tax positions. We are looking for a curious, detailed individual with experience working with various taxing authorities.  

What you’ll be doing:

  • Staying up on the Company’s tax Nexus and refining our policies for Nexus across the various taxes that the Company pays. 
  • Leading Registration for new states/taxes, where applicable.
  • Creating and maintaining a matrix and calendar of all taxes that the Company is registered for, including filing frequency as well as online login information.  
  • Bringing the calculation of the annual GAAP tax provision in house, working with external advisors on an as needed basis. 
  • Supporting the Accounting Team in preparing tax related accruals during month-end close as well as maintaining the Tax Professional Fees budget. 
  • Preparing and reviewing Employee and Contractor payroll for the entire Company to ensure people are accurately paid and on time.
  • Work as the primary business partner with the People team for all payroll related activities.
  • Ensuring benefit enrollments are properly reflected in payroll deductions and validating carrier invoices against enrollment. 
  • Fielding notices from various taxing jurisdictions and promptly addressing them to ensure the Company is always compliant. 
  • Assessing ways to further automate our tax processes using technology.
  • Stay up on emerging Tax and Payroll issues as well as new laws and regulations affecting Tax and/or Payroll

Requirements:

  • 4+ years of tax experience, (a combination of indirect, income and payroll tax experience and Public Accounting preferred)  
  • Highly organized to support a high number of taxing jurisdictions resulting from our remote work environment 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience working with external tax advisors
  • Proactive, curious self-starter with a drive for continuous improvement
  • Experience automating tax filings (preferred, but not required) 
  • Passion for the outdoors 

Bonus Points:

  • Certified Public Accountant 
  • Experience working at a mobile-first B2C tech company
  • High-growth or subscription business experience
  • Experience growing a Tax and/or Payroll function at a Start-up
  • Experience with healthcare and tax-advantage benefits administration 
  • Project management experience
  • Compensation benchmarking and pay equity analysis

$120,000 - $140,000 a year

A successful candidate’s starting salary will be determined based on various factors such as skills, experience, training and credentials, as well as other business purposes or needs. It is not typical for a candidate to be hired at or near the top of the range of their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the factors and circumstances of each case.
