Job Summary
The Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation at Drexel University is seeking an Associate Managing Editor to work independently under the direction of the Managing Director of the Lindy Institute and in collaboration with several Drexel and non-Drexel faculty at peer institutions to oversee the editorial duties of the Urban Affairs Review (UAR).
The Lindy Institute is the institutional home for the academic journal and accompanying website, Urban Affairs Review (UAR). The journal is owned and published by Sage Publications but the website is owned and operated by the Lindy Institute. The journal includes refereed articles, typically by academics, while the website includes ancillary and related materials, including book reviews, brief version of articles from UAR the journal, podcasts and video recordings, and shorter “colloquium” articles.
Candidates from anywhere in the US will be considered, particularly if they meet the experience requirements of having worked with managing academic journals in the subject matter areas of urban planning, public policy, municipal and regional economics, public finance, and/or other allied fields. Periodic in-person meetings at the Lindy Institute’s offices in Philadelphia, PA will be expected.
Essential Functions
- Serve as a liaison between the managing editor and Sage Publications over design and production of UAR the journal.
- Oversee the annual hiring and supervision of a 6-month co-op position – a Drexel undergraduate who will serve as assistant managing editor.
- Oversee and assist with the proofreading of the journal and website contents, shared with the managing editor and assistant managing editor.
- Oversee the design and production of UAR the website, with some responsibility for the content curation.
- Organize and assist in meetings of the editors and editorial board.
- Manage the flow of journal article submissions to individual editors and to external anonymous reviewers.
- Manage UAR databases, especially of the external reviewer pool, through manuscript central.
- Manage the request for and flow of books to the book review editor and individual reviewers.
- Work with the Lindy Institute staff to explore and coordinate collaborative relationships between UAR and the Institute, its Nowak Metro Finance Lab, and its Empathy Lab.
- Coordinate UAR-related communications with Lindy Institute communications staff.
- Other related duties as necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Journalism, Graphic Design, Graphic Communications, Web Design, Marketing or related.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience.
- Knowledge of structure of the English language, including pronunciation, sentence structure, the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree.
- Experience working in urban planning, public policy, municipal and regional economics, public finance, and/or other allied fields.
- Experience managing publications of similar size and stature to the UAR.
