Organizational Setting

The Information Technology Division (CSI) is responsible for IT activities within the Organization. CSI performs on behalf of the Organization several critical roles, among which the development and support of specific technical applications to satisfy business needs. This vacancy aims to gather experts in the area of cloud development to work on an application for the Language Service (CSGLX) office, and specifically the Interpretation Group, which is responsible for the provision of interpretation in the 6 official FAO languages at FAO statutory body meetings, conferences and events, held at Headquarters and in the FAO member states.

Reporting Lines

Under the direct supervision of the Information Technology Officer (Digital Solutions area), the consultant will act as junior Web developer performing the functions described in next paragraph.

Technical Focus

The Cloud Application Developer works for FAO’s Language Service (CSGL) as part of a team responsible for the Interpreter Management System (IMS) as well as other tools and software, to ensure the maintenance and correct functioning of the IMS system, which supports the provision of language services for worldwide meetings.

Tasks and responsibilities

Activities within the assignment:

  • Gain familiarity of the FAO AWS environment (aws.fao.org).
  • Get appropriate access to all systems needed for the maintenance and development of the IMS system.
  • Analyze CSGL customer requirements for the IMS application.
  • Further develop and improve the IMS system as per requirements specified by CSGL team.
  • In collaboration with CSI, maintain the IMS application DEV and QA AWS environment, including ensuring IT security, robustness, scalability.
  • In collaboration with CSI, optimize IMS application AWS services.
  • Continuously improve software engineering practices related to the IMS application.
  • Maintain and modify the IMS backbone DB as per IMS business requirements (mostly for newly developed features).
  • Update IMS associated technical documentation.
  • Update IMS user manual for any intervention on the application that changes or sets new user behaviors.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree or relevant educational certification in Computer Science, IT Engineering, Professional Software Engineer or closely related discipline (for Consultants)
  • Four years of relevant experience in Cloud application development.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English, French or Spanish and, for consultants only, limited knowledge (level B) of one of the other two or Arabic, Chinese, Russian. For PSA, working knowledge of one of the official FAO languages.
