Description

Seeking a highly experienced remote Cloud Database Specialist. The candidate will support growing Cloud Services practice. In particular, the successful candidate will help drive efforts to support the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Cloud and National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) initiatives. These strategic cloud initiatives intend to increase the bureau's IT efficiency, improve IT delivery, and reduce costs.

Requirements

The Database Specialist will support NESDIS satellite ground systems infrastructure and the common services they provide to our global stakeholder community. These systems and services are deemed mission-critical technologies that receive, process, disseminate, store, and archive petabytes of environmental data and information collected from space daily in support of environmental science and the global stakeholder community.

The Database Specialist will work with a team responsible for transitioning scientific satellite ground systems and environmental intelligence data and applications from an on-prem infrastructure environment to the AWS cloud platform without interruption to operations. The candidate will work closely with environmental science teams and stakeholders to: conduct a standard set of project reviews; generate a standard set of documentation; develop and refine requirements; track risks and mitigations; clean code for coding/security, apply common data formats, metadata, and compliances; adhere to standard languages, tools, and libraries; test software; validate products, perform configuration management; and prepare the systems or applications for migration.

Duties:

  • Responsible for all aspects of database administration.
  • Utilize CI/CD tools integration, operations, and automation of CI testing
  • Monitor critical DB indicators such as CPU and memory utilization, disk I/O, Long run SQLs, DB Health, Database events, Deadlocks etc.
  • Utilize Performance Insights, Enhanced Monitoring, Cloud Watch to get insights on the DB activity. Act when these events occur
  • Tune DB engine parameters to meet Application Use Case and yield maximum performance.
  • Fine tune DB schema and queries to minimize query time. Table defragmentation, re-indexing and modifying database structure, etc.
  • Fix inconsistency in Production databases causing application outage/performance degradation.
  • Ensuring cluster is set for automatic failover and can handle a failure.
  • Provide regular maintenance as needed for critical security and system availability updates as planned on or before the deadline date of Releases.
  • Provision database system and allocate compute, memory, and storage resources to workloads.
  • Collaborate with application development and end-users to forecast system usage and resource requirements. Adjust the cloud service tiers to accommodate required capacity growth.
  • identify/reproduce and remediate issues in lower environments.
  • Work with infrastructure-as-code; Terraform and/or CloudFormation as applicable to the application. 

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • 6+ years as database specialist or engineer (preferably supporting an AWS environment)
  • Extensive experience working with TerraForm, Jenkins, Python, Jenkins, or other tools
  • Demonstrated experience with AWS templates
  • Proven experience with database performance tuning
  • Experience and understanding of large-scale infrastructure deployments in enterprise-wide environments required
  • Excellent written, verbal, and analytical skills
  • Ability to obtain a Public Trust Clearance
  • United States Citizen

  • Preferred Certification – AWS Professional or AWS Cloud Practitioner certification
