About the role

Zillow Group’s Legal & Compliance team is looking for an outstanding intellectual property and technical oriented lawyer who thrives in a dynamic and collaborative environment. This lawyer will provide counseling on IP-related and AI related issues and will assist with managing Zillow’s IP portfolios.  Applicants will excel in attention to detail, possess excellent communication skills and can foster positive relationships across functions and levels. 

In this role, you will

  • Help the business protect its IP portfolio through USPTO filings and diligent practices: guide employees through process of identifying ideas/filing patent applications, clear use of names/terms and file trademark applications, ensure proper licensing of Zillow Group's IP portfolio, respond to reports of third-party use of Zillow Group IP 
  • Provide legal support and guidance on issues related to AI, trademarks, open source, patents, copyrights, trade secrets, rights of publicity and other forms of intellectual property
  • Review and provide advice with respect to AI and IP issues in online terms and conditions and negotiated vendor contracts. 
  • Provide sound, practical advice and guidance to business colleagues that help accomplish company objectives

This role has been categorized as a Remote position. “Remote” employees do not have a permanent corporate office workplace and, instead, work from a physical location of their choice, which must be identified to the Company. U.S. employees may live in any of the 50 United States, with limited exceptions.In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC the standard base pay range for this role is $134,000.00 - $214,000.00 Annually. This base pay range is specific to California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Washington state, and Washington DC and may not be applicable to other locations.In addition to a competitive base salary this position is also eligible for equity awards based on factors such as experience, performance and location. Actual amounts will vary depending on experience, performance and location.

Who you are

  • 3+ years of IP law experience, preferably with some in-house counsel experience.  Patent drafting and prosecution experience is a plus.
  • Experience supervising a company’s IP portfolio (including counseling on effective IP strategy options for patents and trade secrets)
  • Experience providing advice on business implementation of AI products
  • Broad-based experience supporting business teams in the internet, technology, and/or media industries
  • A responsive project manager, skilled at communicating (orally and in writing) with business partners
  • Aptitude for innovative and results oriented problem solving 
  • Able to demonstrate good judgment and evaluate risk while considering the larger picture 
  • Conscientious, detail-orientated, and meticulous practitioner
  • A self-starter that proposes creative and practical solutions to challenges
  • JD with active state bar admission
