DevOps Engineer II (CloudOps)

Posted Jul 5

Over the last 11 years, Ellevation Education has built a thriving business serving the administrators, teachers, and specialists who support English Learners at public schools across the US. Today, over 1,200 school districts use our software to manage their EL programs. We are a successful, rapidly growing business with a real mission -- helping English Learners achieve all they possibly can.

As a DevOps Engineer II on the Cloud Operations team at Ellevation, you will play a key role in improving the resilience of our application, ensuring that it is secure and reliably able to meet the needs of our partners. You will be closely aligned with our other platform teams, designing, building, and operating the systems and tools that enable us to build products quickly and safely. You will also help other engineering teams to leverage AWS more effectively to build systems that are scalable and easy to operate and empower them to own those systems.

You are comfortable weighing tradeoffs, generating options, and assessing risks. You excel in finding development paths that incrementally deliver value along the way to broader goals. And you are comfortable in any part of the stack, going deep where necessary.

We look for engineers who are excited to use their technical skills and experience in support of a mission-driven company. We work in small, product-centric teams empowered to make a difference in a particular product or aspect of a product. Our teams are remote-friendly and highly collaborative. To accomplish this, we set core hours of 10AM - 4PM (Eastern) and expect to meet in person (often in Boston) about 4 times per year.

Some of the things you will accomplish:

  1. Upgrade, modernize, and in some cases rewrite our existing Infrastructure as Code configurations
  2. Build tooling to allow other parts of the organization to do their jobs in more secure and scalable ways
  3. Work towards full automation of our system’s regular patching process
  4. Help to develop our organization’s disaster recovery procedures
  5. Help to establish and evolve standards and practices for identity and access management, secret management, and app configuration
  6. Work with our security engineer to protect critical student data
  7. Work closely with other engineering teams, and other internal stakeholders
  8. Collaborate with the rest of the CloudOps team to determine what further technical investments we should make to further our organization’s goals

About you:

  • 2+ years of experience as a Software Engineer or DevOps Engineer
  • Experience working in a cloud-based environment (AWS preferred)
  • Experience operating a production SaaS system
  • Experience in general automation scripting (preferably Python and at least one of Linux Shell or Windows Powershell)
  • Experience working with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred)
  • A collaborative mindset coupled with strong communication skills and a commitment to continuous improvement

$120,000 - $140,000 a year
