Director, Accounting & Finance

PURPOSE OF POSITION: 

Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Director of Accounting and Finance will be responsible for the direct management of accounting operations, financial and regulatory reporting functions within the organization, including internal controls and risk management; technical research and analysis; the procure-to-pay cycle; compliance with contractual obligations and government regulations; and oversee the payroll, time & attendance, employer taxes and benefits cost accounting.

The Director of Accounting and Finance will ensure that the organization has the policies, procedures, internal controls, segregation of duties and systems in place to support organizational effectiveness and ensure flawless audits. The Director of Accounting and Finance will work closely with managers across the organization and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance policies and procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support teams throughout the organization.

The Director of Accounting and Finance will support the CFO with presentations to the Board Finance and Audit Committees as well as with treasury, cash management and forecasting duties.

PRIMAY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Procure to Pay Cycle, Reporting, Payroll and Annual Audit and IRS Filing:

  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating the year-end close process with external auditors, delivering “clean” audit results and timely issuance of financial statements.
  • Ensuring timely and accurate completion of the company’s tax filings
  • Overseeing the procure-to-pay cycle, payroll administration, timesheet/labor costing and fringe benefit cost allocations, reconciliations of subledgers, monthly soft closings, receivable collections, fixed asset accounting, reporting and balance sheet reviews.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies, US GAAP, contractual agreements, and government regulations.
  • Streamlining reporting, business processes, account analyses and transaction entries through ERP automation initiatives.
  • Internal controls and risk management

Enterprise Risk Management:

  • Ensure that the organization has the financial systems, policies, procedures, internal controls, segregation of duties and security access in place to safeguard assets and data; to prevent or detect fraud and conflicts of interest; to promote accurate and timely internal and external reporting and analysis; and to ensure clean financial audits.

Financial Analytics, Advice and Counsel: 

  • Conduct in-depth financial analysis; providing expert financial perspective and opinions; proficient in spreadsheet design to facilitate complex analysis; and instrumental in helping to assess risk, analyze efficiency and inform business decisions made by executive management.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement:

  • Demonstrate an on-going commitment to continuous improvement by implementing systems, structure, policy and/or process enhancements that improve the quality of the Finance department’s products and services and/or the efficiency and effectiveness of business processes.

Special Projects and Back-up:

  • Lead and/or participate in special projects and activities as assigned; and assuming responsibility for the Finance department in the absence of the CFO.

Leadership and Staff Management:

  • Provide direct supervision to Senior and Financial Analyst(s), Senior Accountant and Assistant Controller, including and ensuring regular feedback sessions, performance reviews, leading, motivating, coaching, problem resolution, support, and professional development opportunities to nurture a high-functioning finance team, as appropriate.
  • Work closely with program leaders and their staffs, not only to educate them regarding finance procedures but also to explore how the finance function can support program operations.
  • Partner with the CFO, the People Culture Human Resources (PCHR) and Information Technology teams to enhance and better integrate Finance, PCHR, and IT functions.
  • Partner with Associate Director of FP&A and Associate Director of Award Management and Compliance to ensure timely, accurate financial reporting, operational effectiveness, and coordinated valued financial support.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. A CPA, master’s degree in accounting, finance or MBA is preferred or equivalent combination of education experience, and training.

Experience and Core Competencies:

  • 10+ years of broad finance and accounting experience, including hands-on experience in a complex non-profit organization that has global programs and a high volume of financial transactions.
  • 7+ years Demonstrated experience in managing, leading, and coaching an accounting/finance team, preferably in a union environment.
  • Ability to manage ambiguity, work across a diverse set of disciplines, bridging a wide range of expertise with a demonstrated ability to work with flexibility, especially when there are conflicting demands, meet priorities and deadlines, with efficiency and diplomacy in a fast-paced challenging environment.
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team of top talent; and the foresight and ability to delegate effectively.
  • Key attributes required include strong work ethic, analytical and problem-solving skills, accountability for results, strong partnership and collaboration, attention to detail, excellent interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills.   • 5 years’ experience in an international and multi-currency environment
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with and the financial acumen of all levels of staff throughout the organization; and create and promote a positive and supportive work environment consistent with the organization’s culture, values, core competencies and guiding principles.
  • Must possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, inclusiveness, and a strong work ethic; a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker.
  • Technically proficient in GAAP and IRS regulations governing non-profits; an individual with the utmost professional and personal integrity; ability to engage and assess risk.
  • Technology savvy with advanced knowledge of accounting and reporting software, preferably Unit4/UBW, Power BI; and proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Demonstrated experience in effectively communicating key data in a user-friendly and concise manner to individuals with varying levels of financial acumen, including strong presentations to senior management, the Board members, Finance, Investment, and Audit committee members or other outside partners and key stakeholders.
  • Progressive experience in all aspects of corporate financial management including management reporting, budgeting and variance analyses, and business partnering,

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Prior experience with an international non-profit/NGO is strongly preferred. 
  • Experience of working effectively within a complex, international organization.
  • Fluency in at least one of the other predominantly spoken languages, French or Spanish, desired.

Hiring Range: $145,000- $165,000
