Job Description

The Australian Financial Review is seeking a dynamic and experienced Features Editor to lead the commissioning, editing, and delivery of compelling stories that captivate our audience both online and in print. As the Features Editor, you will play a crucial role in shaping the content of our daily features and the Perspective section of AFR Weekend.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the commissioning and editing of news features, ensuring a consistent flow of high-quality content throughout the week.
  • Work closely with reporters, editors, and other section leaders to allocate writers and develop engaging story angles.
  • Maintain a keen sense of current political, economic, business and cultural matters, utilising this knowledge to produce timely and relevant features.
  • Source and produce stories from syndication partners to diversify and enrich our content offerings.
  • Maximise digital production and presentation.
  • Quickly respond to breaking news and shifting stories, adjusting content plans as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the AFR Weekend editor and contribute to the planning process to ensure a cohesive package for publication.
  • Ensure all features meet high editorial standards and engage our audience effectively.
  • Collaborate with the digital and visual storytelling teams to present features in the most compelling and innovative ways for our online audience.
  • Coordinate with designers, graphic artists, and photographers to enhance storytelling. 
  • Be prepared to work occasional Sunday shifts as required.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience as a features writer and editor, with a strong portfolio of published work.
  • Exceptional writing, commissioning, editing, and communication skills.
  • A deep understanding of current affairs, both nationally and internationally.
  • Well developed knack for ensuring the right mix of content that balances light and shade.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Experience working with digital storytelling formats is advantageous.
  • Experience working with designers, graphic artists and photographers is advantageous.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing news cycles and demands.
