The Opportunity
The graphic and web designer plays a key role within the UT System Division of Communications and Marketing. The position promotes the university’s mission and statewide impact through the design of highly visible and impactful print and digital collaterals and campaigns as well as web properties and products.
Reporting to the director of marketing and working collaboratively with marketing and communications colleagues and internal teams, this position creates designs that achieve project-specific outcomes and support progress toward overarching marketing and communication goals.
Position Responsibilities:
Graphic Design
- With guidance from the associate director of creative services, creates various designs for print and electronic use that promote the UT System visually to internal and external audiences and adhere to brand standards and comply with accessibility standards
- Designs may range from small-scale updates of existing templates to large-scale original design.
- Examples of collaterals and campaigns include informational handouts, presentations, reports, event materials, newsletters, building signage, advertisements and social media campaigns
Web Design and Maintenance
- With guidance from the assistant director of web and digital communications, creates and updates the UT System website (tennessee.edu) and email templates within existing content management and email marketing systems
- Designs may range from small-scale updates on existing webpages to large-scale original designs for new or optimized pages and must adhere to brand standards and comply with accessibility standards
- Examples of web properties and products include landing pages, custom sites for new initiatives, email newsletters and electronic versions of print publications
Merchandise and Print Production
- Assists with production of merchandise, promotional and print collateral orders placed on behalf of the UT System Administration
- Duties may include sourcing products, gathering estimates, finalizing and submitting orders, ensuring fulfillment by stated deadlines, etc.
Other
- Assists with the creation of overarching marketing and communications goals and strategies for the division
- Participates in meetings with internal teams to assess needs, discuss best practices, create plans for achieving goals and review analytics
- Assists with ongoing training efforts among colleagues regarding brand and accessibility standards and usage of design systems and software
- Supports consistent usage of project management system to ensure efficient workflow
- Assists with ongoing management of digital asset libraries
- Performs other related duties as required

Requirements
The successful candidate will hold a bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, graphic design, digital media, marketing or a related field is required with 1-3 years of experience related to job requirements, including graphic and web design, design standards, photo editing and project management.
The designer will possess strong technical skills, creativity and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse audiences. Other key skills include:
- Demonstrated experience collaborating within a team
- The ability to create, edit and troubleshoot in Adobe Creative Cloud software, specifically Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat
- Experience working with WordPress software
- Proficient in industry standard office suite software including digital presentation software
- Knowledge of best practices related to the printing process, including prepress, proofing, bleeds, color spaces, file formats, etc.
- Demonstrated understanding of typography, layout, design principles and industry best practices
- Commitment to ongoing professional development re design trends (both in higher education and beyond) and tools to maintain a high standard of visual execution
- Experience creating design prototypes
- Proven written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize, manage and deliver multiple projects at once
- Ability to act professionally and represent the division in interactions with partners, including upper-level administration
- Outstanding interpersonal relationship building skills
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will have:
- Experience working in higher education or agency setting and experience working with content management systems, specifically block editors.
- Knowledge of analytics and data-gathering platforms and tools (Google Analytics 4, etc.)
- Basic principles and practices of photography
