Instructional Writer

We are seeking a writer with a background in learning and development or instructional design for basic technology adult education classes to partner with our client. This writer will help maintain instructional books and update topics as needed based on changes in the underlying technologies being taught. Example book topics include product-specific tutorials like how to use iPhones (with sections on texting and email, taking and storing photographs, using Apple Pay), how to use Zoom to connect with family and friends, and how to upkeep a Gmail account, as well as broader technology concepts like how to identify and avoid online scams. The majority of the work will focus on updating materials when a technology product changes its user interface, and they may occasionally add new materials or repurpose/ break down existing materials into different modules.
This is a contract position for 10 hours per week for 6 months with the possibility of extension.

Responsibilities
- Translate technical product features into clear step-by-step user instructions
- Write in a clear and engaging voice
- Deliver strong, clean writing on deadline
- Communicate and collaborate professionally and effectively within a remote environment requiring weekly, 30-minute virtual 1:1 meetings and regular asynchronous individual work
- Know when collaboration is necessary and when independent work should suffice
Skills and qualifications
- Excellent Writing Skills: Exceptional writing abilities and the skill to adapt tone and style to write to a sixth-grade reading level and reach the target audience, with impeccable grammar and attention to detail
- Research Proficiency: Strong research skills, with the capability to distill complex concepts into clear, engaging content
- Strong Interpersonal Communication Skills: Ability to hear and understand instructions and project objectives and to take feedback (verbal and written) on board and apply it to future work
- Working Comfort Level Using Common Technologies: While a highly technical background isn’t necessary, the candidate should have familiarity with common technical products and applications and/or the ability to learn them quickly
