.Job Description Summary
As a Lead Design Strategist, you will be a catalyst for positive change by reframing problems through a human-centered lens. With design as your tool, you will uncover new opportunities, imagine divergent futures, and guide stakeholders on the path forward. Reporting to the Associate Director of Design Research and Strategy, you will work closely with our cross-functional teams implementing effective design thinking methods and tactics to help us achieve our business goals. In other words, you will be deployed into some of our most complex problems, with the most uncertainty, and coming out the other side having untangled the ball of yarn.
Job Duties
- Facilitation Expertise: As a skilled facilitator, you will lead workshops and processes that extract valuable insights, result in meaningful outcomes, and inspire engagement. With a deep understanding of design thinking methods, you will adapt your approach to fit any situation, chaining methods together to achieve the best results.
- Research Expertise: Design and execute qualitative and quantitative research studies that reveal critical insights about customers and employees. Synthesize findings into actionable recommendations that drive impact for clients.
- Systems Thinking: Make sense of complex systems by mapping journeys and connections between data points. Possess a holistic view that enables you to zoom in and out, understanding both macro and micro levels.
- Customer Acumen: Understand customers' needs, mindsets, and behaviors through archetypes and "jobs to be done." Align these models with quantitative data to deliver tangible business value.
- Business Savvy: Connect design solutions to business objectives to create outcomes that deliver value to stakeholders and clients. Display a deep understanding of how design impacts strategy, finance, and operations.
- Ideation: Generate novel ideas through lateral thinking and rigorously evaluate designs for feasibility and impact. Comfortable navigating ambiguity and able to conceive ideas at an early stage of development.
- Prototyping: Develop prototypes at varying levels of detail and test them with real users. Show a willingness to experiment and iterate based on learnings from user testing.
- Advocacy: Inspire teams by being a leader and advocate for design. View success by not just the outcome of a project but also the skills shared with others. Communicate results and insights to internal stakeholders to impact design decisions.
- Foresight: Utilize strategic foresight and speculative design to envision alternative futures for the org and its customers. Demonstrate the ability to challenge prevailing paradigms and lead stakeholders toward innovative solutions.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of experience, preferably in complex industries such as fintech, insurtech, or healthtech.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with a bias toward action and ability to self-manage.
- Demonstrated ability to lead UX of enterprise platforms.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in design, business, or human behavior (e.g., psychology, applied anthropology, or sociology) or relevant work experience.
- Strong experience creating and implementing design thinking frameworks.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
- Experience leading cross-functional teams.
- Remote but Chicago preferred
- Travel ability up to 20% of the time - depending on the location of field research, workshops, and facilitation.
- MUST share examples such as case studies, whitepapers, write-ups, and/or presentation decks. Be able to clearly describe involvement in these projects.
