This is the first position focused on product design that we have hired for, so this is an exciting opportunity to join our small team. We are a young product that displays lots of information in small spaces. There’s lots of impactful design work ahead where you can make your mark.

About the Job

At most companies, product design is split into many different roles: UX, UI, front-end development, and so on. At BlackHyve, it's all one role. We believe the best designs come from someone who can see it through from idea to finished product.

That means our designers are generalists - excellent visual stylists, front-end developers, project managers, and writers. As a designer at BlackHyve, you’ll be working on our web interfaces and occasionally our marketing site. You might be improving an existing feature, designing something totally new, or rethinking how we do something.

Along with having great visual taste, you must be able to write your own HTML, CSS, and some JavaScript. You’ll work directly inside our React app to make your designs come to life. Note that we don’t expect you to do all of the implementation on your own. You’ll be paired with at least one other programmer on most projects, and you’ll consult with the rest of the team.

As a designer at BlackHyve, you’ll drive projects using the Shape Up method, set direction, define scopes, take ownership, make calls, and see things through without a lot of oversight. You’ll be able to communicate clearly with your colleagues, work across teams, and lend a helping hand when needed.

Here are some real examples of the work we’ve done in the last 4 weeks that might help you get a better idea of what this job entails:

  • We launched a new feature called Task Portfolio that gives schedulers a gantt view of every task across every project they are working on and the ability to search, sort, and filter this data set to get a better understanding of the work to be done.
  • We added the ability to assign colors to each level of a location breakdown structure and gave the scheduler an option to see these colors on the gantt chart.
  • We added a new trade description field to contractors.
  • We added the ability to send a lookahead schedule directly to a contractor from the schedule.

BlackHyve is a fully remote company, and this is a remote job. You’re free to work where you work best: home office, coworking space, coffeeshops. While most of our team is based in Montana, we don’t have a formal office space. We have worked to build a supportive and inclusive remote work environment. We do ask that your normal workday has at least 4 hours of overlap with an MST workday (8 am - 5 pm MST). We all join a huddle on weekdays at 9 am MST to review the day and catch up.
