Managing Editor
The Escapist is seeking a Managing Editor to join our mission to create informative, interesting, and fun content as the manager of the day-to-day operations of the website and its future growth. We’re looking for a person who has significant knowledge of and passion for the gaming and entertainment realms, extensive skills in editing and writing, experience leading and managing a staff of writers and editors, and a general understanding of growth strategy, high-quality content output, SEO, and beat building. The Escapist website has nearly unlimited potential for growth, both on existing beats and future ones, and the ideal candidate would have an exciting plan for catapulting the site to the next level. This is a full-time role and fully remote, though we are looking for people based in a North American time zone.
The Managing Editor will work alongside Gamurs’ VP of Content and The Escapist brand’s leadership on top-level editorial direction and strategy, mapping out a clear vision for the website’s future. You’ll manage, engage with, and grow the site’s writing staff, handling daily pitch approvals and article assignments and ensuring articles are edited to The Escapist’s high editorial standards. You’ll hire and train new talent as the site grows, and work with the existing staff on reaching new heights. This is a full-time, salaried, remote position with benefits (see below for details).
Key expectations include:
- At least 2+ years in a senior writing or editorial role
- A deep understanding of the gaming and entertainment industries
- Experience growing a website with strategic, high-quality content
- Experience covering the daily news cycle, breaking news, and conventions/events
- A confident writer and editor who has a knack for relaying clear information and supportive feedback to their team
- An ability to balance the competing demands of speed and editorial quality
- Knowledge of AP Style
- Familiarity with WordPress, Slack, Trello, Chartbeat, and Google Analytics a plus
- Existing PR and talent connections within the industry a plus

Pay range: $45,000 to $60,000 USD depending on skills, experience, and location. Salary range may differ for international candidates, based on location.
