About the Role
The Athletic is ambitiously expanding its coverage of sports business and we need an energetic and passionate editor with a strong background in journalism to lead this initiative. The successful candidate will thrive in a collaborative environment while bringing a creative vision of how to elevate and distinguish our content as well as the ability to identify and develop ideas that will generate commercial revenue.
This a remote job based in the United States or Canada.
Responsibilities
- Provide a big-picture, conceptual vision for our sports business report that will extend well beyond traditional coverage in the space to attract new audiences in sports media and entrepreneurship.
- Expand coverage beyond digital text formats to reach audiences in new spaces, including through live events, newsletters and business-focused social platforms.
- Work throughout the newsroom to draw out the best business coverage across all sports.
- Collaborate with the Creative Development and Commercial teams on new revenue opportunities outside of the daily report.
- Work to bring a distinctive, compelling, and authentic voice to content on all platforms.
- Manage a staff of reporters, ensuring they are reaching their potential and doing their best work.
- Maintain a strong understanding of editorial standards and rock-solid news judgment.
- Confident making decisions in fast-paced and competitive space.
- Coordinate staffing assignments, editorial resources and process. Maintain an updated and accurate forward-looking editorial budget.
- Edit and publish stories via WordPress and other content management systems.
Requirements
- 8+ years editing in a professional newsroom with at least 5+ years of business experience.
- Expert ability to generate ideas that result in audience growth and engagement.
- Experience working cross-functionally in a large, complex organization.
- An excellent leader who enjoys facilitating the personal development of colleagues.
- Thorough understanding of the sports business and media spaces.
- Familiarity with multiple social media platforms, especially LinkedIn.
- Self-starter with great time management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and highly organized.
- Ability to execute in the short term while planning long term.
- Expert understanding of the following editing tasks: copy editing, story structure, recognizing problematic sentences, style guidelines.
- Interest and knowledge across a range of different sports.

The annual base salary range for this role is $100,000.00 - $120,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
