About the Role 

We are hiring a People Business Partner to help serve the needs of our team at The Athletic, a subsidiary of The New York Times. This role has the exciting opportunity to help scale the business through the implementation and iteration of new and exciting People initiatives, built to further develop our growing business while fostering deep, impactful professional relationships. The People Partner will have the opportunity to partner and collaborate with our dynamic Headquarters team, ensuring our employees and managers have the optimal employment experience. As a People Partner, you will be the go-to trusted HR resource for the leaders and employees and the point person for Benefits issues and plans. 

The ideal candidate will collaborate extensively with the broader People Team, Headquarters staff, and subject matter experts at The New York Times to ensure working at The Athletic is a world-class experience for all.. The ideal People Partner is eager to develop deep connections, confidently advise management, roll up their sleeves to build alongside an innovative team, foster a world-class employee experience, and be a trusted resource to educate staff on multiple aspects of HR, including benefits and wellness offerings.

The position will be remote-based within the United States and may require some travel.  

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a HR business partner to the Headquarters team, acting as a liaison between your employee population, senior leadership, and the People Team.
  • Advocate on behalf of the Headquarters staff to ensure your people have the tools, resources, and support they and the business need to be successful.
  • Serve as a key stakeholder to help build, iterate, implement and facilitate core People programs (performance reviews, benefits, onboarding/offboarding, training, etc.).
  • Develop and maintain meaningful, high-touch relationships across the Headquarters management team.
  • Be a resource for employee inquiries regarding benefits programs.
  • Lead wellness program initiatives and education sessions.
  • Understand our business model and goals, partner with Headquarters management to drive business priorities forward.
  • Approach people matters with a compliance-driven mindset, sound judgment, discretion, empathy and confidentiality.
  • Manage employee relations cases and investigations including performance management, conflict resolution, and employee concerns with sound professionalism.
  • Perform an array of HR generalist tasks to ensure data integrity across all systems, reports, and programs.
  • Partner with Headquarters management and Talent team to drive workforce planning and internal mobility efforts.
  • Operate as a change agent, rolling out new programs through strong communications, trainings, and management partnership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required or equivalent and relevant professional experience.
  • 3+ years’ experience in a People/HR role.
  • Reputation of integrity, accountability, service, and dedicated work ethic.
  • Demonstrated strong competence in core HR areas, federal and state employment laws and HR best practices.
  • Demonstrated proficiency administering benefits programs.
  • Fundamental understanding of The Athletic’s business, key success metrics and organization structures.
  • Ability to confidently coach, mentor and advise employees and management.
  • Deep desire to connect with employees and build relationships; trusted advocate.
  • Self-starter comfortable under pressure in a fast-paced, fluid environment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and documentation abilities.
  • Proficient with Google Suite.
  • Proficient HRIS experience; Workday a plus.
  • SHRM or PHR certification highly preferred.

The annual base salary range for this role is $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
