Pharmacy Billing Specialist

Job Summary:
The Pharmacy Billing Specialist is responsible for collecting, posting, and managing patient account payments. This position is responsible for submitting patient claims to insurance companies and following up on the claims with insurance companies. Due to production needs of the pharmacy this role will be 2nd shift the potential to rotate between first and second shifts if needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Prepares and submits clean claims to various insurance companies either electronically or by paper
- Answers questions from patients, clerical staff, and insurance companies
- Identifies and resolves patient billing complaints
- Prepares, reviews, and sends patient statements
- Evaluates patient’s financial status and establishes budget payment plans; following and reporting status of delinquent accounts
- Reviews accounts for possible assignment and makes recommendations to the Billing Supervisor; prepares information for the collection agency
- Performs various collection actions including contacting patients by phone; corrects and resubmits claims to third party payers
- Participates in educational activities and attends monthly staff meetings
- Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines and regulations
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to operate a computer, computer software, and basic office equipment
- Ability to operate a multi-line telephone system
- Skilled in answering a telephone in a pleasant and helpful manner
- Ability to read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees. and the public
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- Knowledge of medical billing/collection practice
- Knowledge of business office procedures
- Knowledge of basic medical coding and third-party operating procedures and practices
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
