Who We’re Looking for
More schools and districts, and larger schools and districts are buying ParentSquare to help families and educators communicate and partner in support of their students and we’re searching for a Principal Software Engineer to join the team and support our growing business needs. We need to not only ship clear, simple functionality that makes educators’ lives easier, but we also need to build and run systems that operate robustly at scale, while ensuring the highest level of security for the schools and districts that rely on us.
You will lead by example - fixing production issues, coding urgent/tough implementations, and serving the educators who rely on us every single day to support the millions of students on our platform.
You will work with our customers and our teammates from product, engineering, design, sales, and marketing to ensure we build the right thing as quickly and as simply as possible. You will both teach and learn from your teammates as you seek to understand their challenges, needs, and expertise as you work with them to ship new features every sprint. You will do a little bit of everything - design, code, test, deploy, debug, find and fix bugs, reduce costs, secure our systems, run projects, document challenges, improve processes, and be a trustworthy member of our team.
Most importantly, you’re someone who shares in our passion for improving the lives of students through communication.

- Constantly improving the cost, security, scalability, and maintainability of the ParentSquare platform
- Working across our ecosystem - web, service layer, database, message queues - to deliver value for our customers
- On any given day, you might be reviewing PRs, helping a team accelerate delivery, finding a subtle production issue, or designing the future architecture of our systems
Our ideal candidate will have the following:
- Deep expertise with large-scale services on Ruby/Python and JavaScript/TypeScript
- Mastery of service and application development with MySQL/Postgres
- Expertise in distributed systems - both monoliths and otherwise - and relational databases (and not only at the ORM level)
- Mastery of deploying and operating systems at scale on AWS/Aurora/RDS/SQS
- Experience incrementally migrating and evolving monolithic architectures to serve a very successful business
- Experience building unified technical direction and engineering culture with leadership
- Proficiency with RESTful API development
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in Computer Science or related field.
