Onfido is the new identity standard for the internet. We empower people around the globe to reach services they love and need simply, speedily and safely – whether they’re renting a car or opening a bank account or completing a high-value transaction where identity is key. We built a full-service suite of AI-powered identity verification solutions with fairness and inclusiveness at their core, and were awarded ‘Outstanding Leader in Accessibility’ and ‘Best Innovation in Algorithmic Bias Mitigation’ awards at CogX.

Onfido is an established pre-IPO technology company with a prominent position in the global marketplace that has been repeatedly recognized for excellence in performance and innovation. In 2021 we were awarded ‘Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Hot Company’ by CyberDefense Global Infosec Awards, ‘Fraud Prevention Innovation of the Year’ at the CyberSecurity Breakthrough Awards, and named to the CB Insights Fintech 250 for the fourth year running. We've received over $200 million in funding from investors including TPG Growth, Microsoft, and Salesforce to achieve our vision. We partner with thousands of businesses to help millions access services every week – from billion dollar institutions to hypergrowth unicorns. We support identities from 195 countries, and 2,500+ document types. Our recent growth is fuelled by continued increasing demand in the United States – where we’ve grown in year-over-year sales by 264% – as more enterprise organisations accelerate their digital transformation plans with Onfido.

Our goal is to work together to promote and celebrate an inclusive and diverse community. Collectively, all Onfidoers are committed to creating an environment where everyone can be themselves, and where differences are celebrated. We encourage people from all backgrounds and cultures to come together to solve some of the world's most interesting problems.

The Opportunity

Onfido is looking for an interim Privacy Counsel on a fixed term contract to cover maternity leave. Reporting to the Global Head of Privacy, you will create and drive key data protection initiatives across Onfido’s business globally. In doing so, you’ll work closely with key stakeholders across the business, promoting a strong culture of handling and managing personal data sensitively and effectively.

Throughout, you’ll collaborate with talented legal colleagues and work with a supportive and encouraging team lead.

Onfido’s service model is at the forefront of data privacy: developing cutting edge artificial intelligence technologies to perform remote, digital identity verification, including biometric checks. This technology has the potential to do tremendous good by creating a more open and accessible world, while of course there are very real privacy issues in how this technology is built and then made available to the public. This is a unique opportunity to help shape pragmatic solutions to enable privacy and technology to co-exist.

As Privacy Counsel at Onfido you will:

  • Work closely with our Product and Engineering teams to ensure privacy by design and ongoing compliance with biometric, privacy, AI and cyber security laws and regulations.
  • Develop and improve Onfido’s privacy compliance programme to meet requirements of emerging laws.
  • Advise colleagues across our business on customer-facing matters such as: coordinating responses to customer privacy and security concerns including AI governance and transfer impact assessments, communicating Onfido’s privacy compliance and safeguards.
  • Supporting the wider legal, procurement and growth teams with client deals including being a point of escalation for contract negotiations.
  • Respond to day to day privacy queries from across the Onfido business including on Product, HR, Contracts, Client queries, End User and Law Enforcement requests.
  • Lead on privacy vendor due diligence and ongoing vendor management matters, undertaking risk assessments, developing supplier privacy compliance frameworks and managing records of processing including client notifications.
  • Work collaboratively with key stakeholders, including Product, Marketing, Compliance, Legal, Strategy, HR and Information Security teams, setting clear accountabilities and policies for data protection.
  • Create and deliver training programmes, legal resources and contribute to our playbooks.
  • Monitor global privacy, AI and biometric regulation and policy developments, advise on risks and opportunities arising from emerging laws and help drive Onfido’s policy positions.

We’re looking for a Privacy Counsel who can display the below skills & experience throughout our interview process:

  • 2-6 years’ experience in-house or at a top law firm (with secondment experience), with a solid focus in data protection matters.
  • Demonstrable experience of leading on a range of privacy projects and issues.
  • Expertise in advising on UK and EU GDPR, ideally in a fast paced technology company, financial services company or other regulated industry.
  • Strong commercial acumen; able to take a pragmatic approach to legal risk and advise the business accordingly.
  • Skilled at collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders across all levels of the business.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Team player with a can-do approach; no job is too big or too small.
  • Enjoy working in a fast-paced, dynamic business.
  • Qualified to practise law in the UK or equivalent jurisdiction.
  • Interest in technology.

It would also be great to see the following:

  • Prior in-house experience within a high-growth technology company.
  • Familiarity and working knowledge of other global data protection regimes including US state laws.
  • Experience with data risk management and/or supporting audits from a privacy perspective.
  • CIPP/E or equivalent.
