Company Description

Swiftly is on a mission to help cities move more efficiently. We are the leading transit data platform for agencies to share real-time passenger information, manage day-to-day operations, and improve service performance. Today, over 150 transit agencies in 8 countries – including LA Metro, MARTA, SEPTA, MBTA, and WMATA – rely on Swiftly to improve on-time performance by up to 40% and increase passenger information accuracy by up to 50%. The result is better service reliability, increased ridership, and more efficient transit operations.

Engineering at Swiftly

Engineering at Swiftly is not only about writing code – we believe in creating empowered product teams that work together to conceptualize new features and bring them to life. Each team aims to strike a balance between delivering incremental improvements, creating prototypes to test new ideas and mitigate risks, and building scalable software using industry best practices. We’re guided by a mission to positively impact transit riders, and we embrace humility and intentionality in how we make technical decisions so that we best meet our customers’ needs.

About the Role

We are looking for a Senior Android Engineer who will contribute significantly to Swiftly’s vision of building a Connected Transit Platform. Our software ingests and analyzes real-time location and other data from vehicles to enable agencies to operate better service. This role will join a team that builds products for transit agencies to manage day-to-day operations, including communication among staff and transit operators. More specifically, you will play a pivotal part in designing, developing, and implementing scalable, secure, and high-performing, product features to enhance our Onboard App experience for bus operators and transit professionals.

Onboard App is an intuitive display that runs on commodity Android tablets and provides real-time feedback directly to operators. This application helps to mitigate on-time performance issues, informs operators of service corrections like detours or holds, and boosts operator morale by removing the guesswork from their daily workflows and improving passenger satisfaction.

We encourage you to apply if the above is exciting to you and if you meet half or more of the below requirements. Above all else, we value candidates who angle toward growth, leveraging a positive attitude and the aptitude to relentlessly seek and solve problems to deliver impact. We know the tech landscape is ever-changing and strongly support individual growth. If this is exciting to you, then we'd love to talk!

Swiftly's office is located in San Francisco, CA. We are open to local or remote candidates living in the US or Ontario, Canada. We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship at this time. #LI-Remote

Responsibilities

  • Partner closely with designers, product managers, and fellow engineers to build products that delight our customers

  • Strive to embody software best practices in your work and proliferate them through teamwork, mentoring, and code reviews
  • Improve engineering processes and tools to increase team effectiveness

  • Experience with building feature-rich map-based experiences
  • Experience with real-time communication tooling like VoIP, Websockets, and/or Twilio
  • Experience with connecting an application to devices via Bluetooth
  • You love applying technology to solve real problems for customers and users
  • Bonus if familiar with other parts of our tech stack: Vue.js, Cordova, Python/JupyterHub, AWS, Docker (AWS ECS), PostgreSQL
  • Bonus if you've built end-to-end applications between the frontend, backend, and database layers

  • You are a dynamic team player and seek to make valuable contributions wherever it is most-needed at any given time to support your team's goals
