Senior Backend Engineer, Growth

Posted Dec 4

At Webflow, our mission is to bring development superpowers to everyone. Webflow is the leading visual development platform for building powerful websites without writing code. By combining modern web development technologies into one platform, Webflow enables people to build websites visually, saving engineering time, while clean code seamlessly generates in the background. From independent designers and creative agencies to Fortune 500 companies, millions worldwide use Webflow to be more nimble, creative, and collaborative. It’s the web, made better.

We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our Growth, responsible for helping more people succeed with Webflow and become customers. You will help us build engineering projects that impact new user onboarding, in-product education, lifecycle campaigns, and experimentation. Everything you work on will have a direct and measurable impact on Webflow’s business metrics and trajectory. If you have a mix of frontend and backend development, strong systems and product thinking, owned projects end to end in the past, and want to use your technical skills to drive business growth, this role could be a great fit. We are a highly autonomous team, and we spend a lot of time understanding customer behaviors and then work with cross-functional partners to define and launch tests.

About the role

  • Location: San Francisco HQ, US Remote, or ON/BC, Canada
  • Full-time
  • Exempt
  • Our cash compensation amount for this role ranges from $130,000 - $178,000 for most US locations and $144,000 - $198,000 for US locations with a higher cost of labor. All figures cited above are in $USD and pertain to workers located in the United States. Pay is based on several factors including market location, and may vary depending on job related experience, knowledge, qualifications, and skills.

As Senior Backend Engineer on the Growth team, you’ll:

  • Work autonomously on growth experiments with a clear target on outcome.
  • Develop a deep understanding of our architecture and codebase while also learning about our product and the customers that use it
  • Build and maintain unit and integration tests (Mocha, Jest, Cypress)
  • Share growth insights and mentor other engineers on best practices in growth engineering, data-driven decision-making, and experimentation techniques.
  • Develop a deep understanding of the business model, growth metrics, and the personas of the customers that use our product.
  • Work on the experimentation frameworks and notification systems

That said, these responsibilities are just the start! At Webflow, we encourage you to contribute wherever your interests take you — and shape your role accordingly.

About you

You’ll thrive in this role if you:

  • Feel comfortable working across the stack from React components with node based backend
  • Have 5+ years of experience in scalable, multi-tenant environments that drive rich front-end experiences.
  • Have experience on a Growth team is a major plus but not essential. Here is a good read about habits of an effective growth team, we do expect you to demonstrate these behaviors.
  • Have excellent organization and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Have worked on complex issues where the analysis requires an in-depth knowledge of the company and existing architecture.
  • Can debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
  • Take pride in taking ownership and driving projects to business impact
  • Have proven experience building complex web systems.
  • Are familiar with one or more Javascript type systems (we use Flow & next.js here)
  • Are comfortable working in an agile, safe-to-fail environment

If you don’t meet 100% of the above qualifications, you should still seriously consider applying. Studies show that you can still be considered for a role if you meet just 50% of the role’s requirements.
