Senior Software Engineer (Product)

The role

Maven is the best way to learn critical career skills after college. We’re looking for product engineers that want to work with a small and highly capable team towards this vision.

Maven engineers value the craft of engineering and product design, and own big ideas ranging from our marketplace storefront, our best-in-class cohort-based course platform, and our data tooling that helps our small team manage a fast growing marketplace of practitioner-led courses. We have the opportunity to elevate how students learn from peers and experts online.

Examples of project we’re working on:

  • Building a new syllabus and project experience with the TipTap editor at its core. We want to set the standard for a course platform that merges synchronous and asynchronous learning.
  • Using embeddings and a deep understanding of students to generate quality personalized course recommendations and semantic search, and surfacing them in key moments and flows across the product.
  • Architecting a unified notifications system to send students personalized nudges at the right times before, during, and after a course.

You have ideally shipped meaningful features to a real user base, and are comfortable with a broad set of concerns that come with building production web apps on the client, server, and infra layers, though we don’t expect you to be an expert on all of it.

We use React/Nextjs, Python/FastAPI, Postgres/OpenSearch, and dbt/Snowflake for our data pipeline.

The team

We’re a team of 15, working remotely, but meeting in person 4x a year.

We’re very experienced so you’ll get to learn from and work with a broad range of top talent. I (Shreyans, co-founder/CTO) was the first employee at Venmo and a key engineer until they were acquired. I then founded, built, and sold Socratic - one of the early AI-powered education apps - to Google. My co-founder and CEO, Gagan, was a co-founder at Udemy. Our designer designed Twitter threads and the Airbnb listings page, and others on the team are equally capable, even if earlier in their careers.

We work really well together, and our instructors are amazed by how quickly we ship high quality features. We are closely connected with our users, learn from our frequent dialogues, effectively debate decisions internally, and move with conviction but an open mind.

About Maven

Maven is building the university of tomorrow. We're starting by building the largest marketplace of expert-led cohort-based courses on the Internet. This is a major innovation from existing video-based courses, because cohort-based courses involve a live instructor, an engaging cohort community and the accountability of a start and end time. Whereas a standard self-paced course has a 5-10% completion rate, Maven's completion rate is closer to 70-90%.

We've raised $25 million from Andreessen Horowitz, First Round, and great angel investors.
