Senior Software Engineer, Square Go

Posted Dec 30

Company Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality through Afterpay, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

Job Description

Square Go is our new consumer local marketplace app, starting in Beauty & Personal Care. It’s hands down one of our most exciting new products. It puts the power in consumer’s hands to discover, connect, and book self-care experiences that make them feel their best—and bookings are only the beginning. Download the app, and try it out. Exposing powers we’ve built for merchants directly to buyers is largely novel work at Square. We’re looking for a backend engineer who is comfortable working across teams, undaunted by shipping new products that rest on moving pieces. We’re still a small team (7 engineers), and we’ll be working across Square’s entire stack. The new pieces we exclusively own are built with Rails, Kotlin, Elasticsearch, ML, React, and SwiftUI/iOS.

Experience in all languages or frameworks is definitely not required, but a track record of designing and building across service boundaries is. In the last year, almost every engineer has put on multiple hats—learning and deploying new tech, and exercising product and design muscles.

You Will:

  • Lead cross-team efforts to turn merchant business tools into buyer superpowers.
  • Architect the systems that power both sides of a marketplace.
  • Generalize a product that started around booking management to one that facilitates all buyer interactions.
  • Guide and participate in critical technical, design, and product discussions with leaders across our various product and engineering teams.
  • Uplevel the technical design and product build acumen for the team.

Technologies we use and teach:

  • Languages: Ruby, Java/Kotlin
  • Frameworks: Rails, RSpec, React, Sidekiq, gRPC, Guice
  • Infrastructure: MySQL, Redis, Kafka, Elasticsearch

Qualifications

You Have:

  • 8+ years of experience in building and releasing software
  • Experience leading engineering designs with large scale impact
  • Experience collaborating with product managers, client app engineers, designers, data scientists, and other engineering and cross-functional leaders
  • Interest in working on an early stage product, with all its inherent ambiguities
  • Interest in working on backend systems, from APIs and business logic to optimizing databases and software engines
  • Interest in modeling complex domains and building resilient systems to support high-throughput real world applications
  • Proficient in at least one server-side programming languages (e.g. Ruby, Java)
  • Knowledge of cloud concepts and systems (e.g. AWS, GCP)
