Upwork's Tax as part of Finance & Accounting is leading the effort to ensure Upwork is in full compliance with various tax rules and regulations around the world. We are also able to influence how our platform users are able to experience the work marketplace. This position will report to the Tax Senior Director, and will manage the day-to-day tax operations at Upwork.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Manage all aspects of oversea indirect tax compliance matters including Canadian/Australian GST and HST, DST, and VAT
  • Oversee outside providers to ensure timely, complete and accurate filing of international tax returns, extensions and payments
  • Manage monthly tax accounting processes for international entities and working closely with Accounting team members and external service providers
  • Manage tax controversy process for state and local tax audits and notices
  • Provide support in preparation of the monthly indirect tax accounting reconciliations and analysis related to state and sales & use taxes
  • Identify, design and implement process improvements for efficient and effective international tax compliance and accounting including local GAAP book.
  • Prepare ad hoc analyses, and assist, lead and/or manage with special international tax projects such as IP and tax structure
  • Perform research on a variety of international tax issues, including new transaction taxes and project-specific projects.
  • Ensure new products and markets launch with indirect tax compliance requirements and processes implemented, minimizing risk and exposure to penalties
  • Assist Tax Senior Director to manage and execute transfer pricing controls of international entities

What it takes to catch our eye:

  • Experience working as a tax manager in a dynamic, fast growing public company, marketplace experience is a plus
  • Consistent track record of identifying issues and coming up with creative solutions
  • Ability to prioritize and deliver on your commitments timely and accurately
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in order to work with the cross functional team
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment with the ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects / responsibilities

The annual base salary for this position in California and Washington ranges from $116,000 - $188,000. The range displayed reflects the minimum and maximum salary for this position in California and Washington, and individual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Additionally, this position is eligible for the annual bonus plan or sales incentive plan and eligibility to participate in our long term equity incentive program.
