Full Job Description

Come join our creative, can-do writing group for Microsoft Teams! We’re a team of end-user focused UX Design writers and Content Strategists, and we’re looking for a versatile, tech-savvy writer to join us in creating Microsoft Teams—and shaping the future of work for millions of people around the world, no big deal. :)

Microsoft Teams is the chat-based workspace in Office 365. It’s all the people, content, tools, and conversations you need to get work done into one place-a hub for teamwork. Our copy and writing work for Teams includes user interface text, first-run experiences, in-product contextual assistance and notifications, web sites, video scripts, help and how-to guidance and best practices, and more. On a typical day in this role, you might:

  • Work with an interaction designer to craft copy for a user interaction flow
  • Do a terminology exploration for a new concept
  • Develop copy treatments for a user research study or in-product experiment
  • Bring your voice to a design critique of proposed features or scenarios
  • Draft a new entry for our term list and review with the team
  • Review customer comments and update copy to improve understanding
  • Review a how-to video script
  • Observe a customer study

And you’ll do it all as a member of the Microsoft Teams Design studio, in partnership with our world-class designers, researchers, content creators, marketers, and engineering teams. You’ll create new product experiences, and your words will help customers learn, solve their problems, and get the most out of Microsoft Teams.

You’ll love this role if:

  • You’re passionate about words, design, and technology
  • You know the names of a few parts of speech
  • You love a variety of writing challenges—from teeny mobile spaces to coherent cross-product flows
  • You dig digging into metrics and customer feedback
  • You thrive in creative, collaborative cultures, yet are disciplined, organized, and able to independently manage the details of your work
  • You’re proactive about communicating priorities and trade-offs—and adjusting as you get feedback
  • You’re self-aware, growth-minded, and composed
  • You understand the broader context of your work, and can always map your activities to both customer needs and business goals
  • Most of all, you care about the people who are using technology, and making their experiences better

Responsibilities

  • As part of the design process, write and edit friendly, brilliantly clear UX copy—with occasional flair
  • Perform functional and editorial quality assurance on copy as appropriate
  • Understand and effectively use our style guide, and brand voice
  • Use multiple sources of customer data to inform strategic copy direction and improvements
  • Drive and participate in copy coherence efforts across organizations, products, and platforms
  • Work with stakeholders such as Accessibility, Localization, and Marketing

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years proven writing or content design experience AND a certification, degree, or training in English, Writing, Human-centered Design, Literature, or related field
  • OR equivalent experience
  • 1+ year(s) project leadership experience.
  • Portfolio review of writing and content samples
  • North American English fluency

Preferred Qualifications:

  • BA/BS degree in English, Communications, Creative Writing, Journalism, or other literary/communication subjects
  • 5+ years of experience writing end-user facing UX copy (applications, web apps, ecommerce, etc.)
  • Natural and inquisitive passion for modern technology
  • Experience working with the Design discipline (interaction, visual)
  • Experience working with customer research
  • Agency copywriting experience
  • Flexible, versatile writing across form factors, subject matter, and audiences
  • Experience with instructional video and visuals
  • Self-motivated collaboration and problem-solving skills

Understanding Roles at Microsoft

The top of this page displays the role for which the base pay ranges apply – Writing IC4.

The way we define roles includes two things: discipline (the type of work) and career stage (scope and complexity). The career stage has two parts – the first identifies whether the role is a manager (M), an individual contributor (IC), an admin-technician-retail (ATR) job, or an intern. The second part identifies the relative seniority of the role – a higher number (or later letter alphabetically in the case of ATR) indicates greater scope and complexity.

We also consider qualified applicants regardless of criminal histories, consistent with legal requirements.
