SUMMARY
We are seeking to fill a Senior Hardware Design Engineer, Power Electronics position located in Radford, VA. At Kollmorgen, we believe in the power of motion and automation to create a better world. In this role, you will develop innovative and high-quality motor drive products for high performance motion control. You will mostly work on new product development, but will also help to sustain existing designs, help regulatory testing, and assist production with quality issues.
A qualified candidate needs strong problem-solving abilities. Interest and willingness to work and contribute within a collaborative team is required.
After completion of onboarding and required training, this role can be performed on a hybrid schedule.
You will be working with world class experts in the following areas:
2 and 3-phase power stages from 24VDC to 480VAC and from 1 Arms to 200 Arms.
Control algorithms for switching power supplies and motor control
Mathematical theoretical analysis of circuits and systems (e.g., SPICE, PSIM, MATLAB)
Lab testing with high power electronics and rotating machinery to validate operation
UL, CE, CSA, TUV agency certification, international regs RoHS, REACH and SCIP Database
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities:
Specify, analyze, model and design complex power electronics used in motor drives
Create schematics, part lists, test specifications, and technical documentation
Oversee and lead PCB layout and mechanical designs
Collaborate with other departments and design groups to ensure successful product introduction and help maintain the product throughout its lifecycle
Participate in system integration testing to validate product functionality
Support the team to ensure successful agency certification: UL/CE, TUV, RoHS, REACH etc.
Specify usage of components and motor drive accessories
Support customers, applications engineering, documentation, and quality teams as needed
Opportunity to lead small teams on projects
Job Requirements:
Critical Competencies
Required:
Knowledge of switching power supplies
Ability to design custom magnetics
Ability to define and select parts for your design
Power transistor/module, current sensor design/selection, ac rectifier and bus capacitor, high power connector selection, gate drive design, power supply component selection, magnetics selection or design, EMI filters
Proficient with the use of oscilloscopes, digital multi-meters, and other equipment used to validate motor drives up to 480Vac
Strong mentoring, coaching and leadership skills
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills. Skilled in root cause analysis
Ability to clearly communicate in a variety of communication settings and styles
Preferred:
General motion knowledge (e.g. motion trajectories, kinematics, motors, drives) is highly valuable
General analog hardware design skills
Familiarity with solder rework
Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required
5+ years power design engineering experience required
Comprehensive knowledge in 100-100kW motor drive power stage design
Physical Demand and Work Environment:
Able and willing to safely work in a laboratory environment utilizing high power equipment and diagnostic tools.
