Staff Accountant
Company Overview:
Cooper Thomas is a health information management services company based in Washington, DC with employees across the US. Founded in 2003, our health information services business is separated into two segments: Program Management Support and Health Information Management (HIM) Services including medical coding, auditing, training, and clinical document improvement services. Program Management Support is focused on supporting Federal Agencies with services to support discreet health information and technology projects. HIM Services are delivered to Federal Agencies and Commercial clients.
Since 2021, the Company has experienced significant growth and is quickly expanding through new contracts awarded from clients. This position will eventually be supported by hiring additional staff accountants as required and is a perfect position for an individual who wants to grow into a Controller position in the near future. At the present time, this is a remote work position, though the candidate preference is to favor those applicants living in DC, the adjacent MD and VA areas,
Reports: CFO
Education required: Bachelor’s Degree in a four-year accounting and finance program.
Experience required: Exposure to professional services and Federal Contracting in a small company environment is a plus+. An understanding of cost accounting and working knowledge and application of fixed, variable, and semi-variable costs is a plus+. Must have familiarity with GAAP, accounting for fixed-price contracts, and accrual basis accounting. The ideal candidate will have 2-5 years’ experience.
Personality: Must enjoy working in a collaborative environment focused on efficiency and constant improvement. Must be an energetic self-starter, organized, have attention to detail, require minimal supervision, but is not afraid to ask for help when confronted with a problem. Must maintain good time management skills, eager to take on more responsibility and communicate well verbally and in writing.
Accounting exposure to:
- Payroll functions and procedures (ADP)
- Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable
- Maintaining general ledgers and bookkeeping procedures
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, highly skilled with Excel including pivot tables and macros
- Daily use of financial accounting systems (Ex: QuickBooks General Ledger & ADP Time Reporting & Payroll)
- Confident with learning new technology tools
Specific Areas of Accounting:
Payroll Administration
Process payroll and maintain payroll information as required:
- Accounting for New hire’s and termination’s, leave of absence, benefits deductions, garnishments, etc.
- Time reconciliation between time management and payroll systems
- Accounting for employee benefits (PTO, 401K, Health Savings Account)
- Exposure to monthly, quarterly and year end reconciliations
Accounts Payable
- Accurately and timely preparation of weekly payments (checks and/or ACH payments) with appropriate supporting documentation and according to company policy
- Creation of new vendors
- Management of vendor banking/address changes
Accounts Receivable
- Prepare monthly invoices for entry in QuickBooks
- Record deposits in General Ledger
Exposure to month end journal entries and schedules
- Prepaid expenses
- Depreciation and fix asset schedules
- Recurring monthly accruals
Work Review
- Daily review of production, operational related entries
Other
- Prepare monthly account reconciliations and GAAP financial statement & income/expense variance analysis
- Support Executive Management with ad-hoc requests
