Do you want to work with the leading digital news team in Scotland? We are now looking for a Trainee Trends Writer to join our award-winning editorial team at the Daily Record.

You will cover a varied range of subjects from current affairs to viral news and deliver that content to a wide audience while retaining the Daily Record’s high standards of storytelling.

We’re looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives from people from a wide range of backgrounds, and we want you to tell us the stories you believe are important from our many communities so we can continue to diversify our content.

This role can be fully home based or linked to our Glasgow hub, we are therefore open to candidates from anywhere in the UK.

Job Description

What will the role involve?

You will source, create, publish and share trending content for the Daily Record. You will identify the latest search trends and hot topics on social media, and know how to turn them into engaging digital content. You will write engaging stories in an accessible way, always keeping your target audience in mind. You will write content that meets the Daily Record's high standards, with pictures, video, audio and strong headlines. 

You will use and understand key search terms needed to boost your content and the ideal times and platforms to optimise your stories. You will play a key role in engaging your audience through sharing content using social media platforms. You will manage relevant site sections and social feeds, engaging readers directly. You will ensure all your content is created in accordance with IPSO compliance and using accurate metadata. This role will involve working shifts on a rota basis including some weekends/evenings so a flexible approach is required.

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

You are a passionate, aspiring journalist with an NCTJ or equivalent journalism degree/qualification and an understanding of media law (essential). You have a deep understanding of how people behave on social media and can use that to create engaging content. You are a first class storyteller and have excellent writing skills. Some demonstrable experience writing for a large regional or national news title is highly desirable. 

You have some understanding of SEO and have a keen eye for trending content. You are an adaptive creative with a positive attitude and excellent team working skills. You can work well in a fast paced newsroom environment and can meet deadlines with ease.
