We are looking for a Deputy Editor to play a vital role in our US operations. Based in our London office, and reporting to the Editor-in-Chief in New York, you will lead a team of journalists across our US titles that include the Mirror US, Express US & Irish Star, concentrating on US content. 

You will be responsible for ensuring that our US sites have the latest and best news, as well as creating an environment that encourages new ideas for digital content that will drive audience growth and engagement. 

Job Description

What will the role involve?

As a Deputy Editor you will play a crucial role in our continued US expansion. Leading a team of journalists you will deliver a fast turnaround on major news and entertainment stories from across both the US and globally, as we look to set ourselves apart from our rivals.

As a senior member of the US operation you will attend planning meetings to coordinate our coverage of major stories and events. You will edit copy and assign stories to journalists as required, and will be responsible for page view and audience growth targets.

Supporting the US operations means that you will need to meet strict editorial deadlines and targets which allow for maximum coverage and audience exposure across multiple time zones. You will also be responsible for the rota, as well as any casual cover and budget as required.

Location & Shift Patterns 

This role is located in our Canary Wharf office, we are therefore open to candidates based in or commutable to London.

Weekday shifts for this role will be 7am-3pm (GMT), with weekend shifts of 3pm-11pm (GMT) also required. Weekend shifts aim to be 1-in-3 weeks. 

A level of flexibility is required in this role, as shifts are open to changes as a result of major events of significant breaking news. 

Qualifications

Who are we looking for?

You are digitally savvy with an acute attention to detail, coupled with previous experience of working in a senior editorial role within a news organisation. You are comfortable working in a fast paced environment and meeting strict deadlines.

You will be an experienced leader with a strong track record of managing teams, supporting and enabling them to achieve success and driving a high performance culture.  

You will be able to demonstrate a passion and knowledge of US news and preferably an understanding of the US media landscape. 

Importantly, you are an excellent communicator and leader who is capable of inspiring and motivating a team. A proven problem solver, you will possess the ability to make decisions under pressure as stories or events evolve.
